ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Phil Nevin will not return as the Los Angeles Angels’ manager next season. The Angels announced Monday that they are declining their contract option for 2024 on Nevin, who ran the dugout for the last 1 1/2 seasons. Los Angeles will have its fourth manager in six seasons since the departure of Mike Scioscia, who held the job for 19 years.Nevin went 119-149 in his first major league managerial job while both of his teams missed the playoffs. He managed this season on a one-year contract while owner Arte Moreno explored a sale of the team, only to take it off the market.Nevin was promoted to the Angels’ top job in June 2022 when Joe Maddon was fired in the middle of a 14-game losing streak. Nevin, who had only joined Maddon’s staff as his third base coach in November 2021, became the first Orange County native to manage the Angels. As a former elite infielder and No. 1 overall pick who still carries himself like a ballplayer, Nevin appeared to be well-liked b...

Rays, Rangers face off in AL Wild Card Series after looking at points like best teams in baseball

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays and Texas Rangers both looked like they might be the best teams in baseball for significant stretches of a long season in which they now find themselves facing each other in an AL Wild Card Series. The Rays got off to a historic 13-0 start and led the American League East by as many as 6½ games before a horrendous July left them playing catch-up the rest of the season to eventual division champion Baltimore.Texas, meanwhile, is back in the playoffs two years after losing 102 games.A dominant offense carried the Rangers much of the season, enabling them to weather injuries and remain in prime position to win the AL West until their potent bats faltered in the closing days, when they fell one win shy of a division title.“It’s a resilient team. … We’ve had our share of ups and downs,” Rangers general manager Chris Young said Monday.“We certainly sustained a number of injuries that have impacted us, yet here we are in the playoffs, whi...

The exasperating Raiders need to change their fortunes and their narrative

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 09:37:44 GMT

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — There’s always something exasperating going on with the Las Vegas Raiders. What happened Sunday isn’t nearly as serious as the recent Chandler Jones saga or the offensive emails that cost Jon Gruden his job, but it still follows a disturbing pattern for the Raiders.Jerry Tillery took an unnecessary shot at Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert, who was clearly out of bounds, in Los Angeles’ 24-17 victory. That drew a personal foul penalty, the ire of the LA players on the sideline who immediately came to Herbert’s defense and the decision from the league office to eject the former Charger. As for whether the play warranted an ejection, the NFL is always going to come down on the side of keeping the quarterback safe. Tillery should’ve known better, and it was in that same SoFi Stadium last season that he swiped the ball out of the hands of Los Angeles Rams QB Baker Mayfield. That helped extend what turned out to be the winning drive fo...
