Countdown begins on PSG star Kylian Mbappé’s future. Real Madrid and Liverpool possible destinations

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 08:14:45 GMT

PARIS (AP) — As the New Year begins, so does the countdown on Kylian Mbappé’s future. It promises to be a nervous start to 2024 for Paris Saint-Germain and its fans with speculation set to intensify about their prolific striker, one of only two players in soccer history to score a hat trick in a World Cup final.Mbappé began this season in a transfer standoff with his club after not taking up the option of a 12-month extension into 2025. It means that, starting Jan. 1, he can openly talk to other clubs or even sign a pre-contract agreement with long-time suitor Real Madrid or Premier League leader Liverpool.Mbappé can do so because his contract runs out in June, when he can leave the defending French champion for free, having joined from Monaco —- initially on loan in 2017 — for 180 million euros (now $199 million). The France star is PSG’s all-time leading scorer with 233 goals despite only recently turning 25, and has already netted some 46 goals for Les Bleus. But it has ...

The 2023 Red Sox: By the numbers

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 08:14:45 GMT

Baseball is a numbers game. It has always been a numbers game.Number of games played, homers hit, runs driven in, strikeouts, walks. Wins and losses. Averages and percentages. Single-season and career statistics. Record highs and personal worsts. That’s not even getting into the advanced metrics of the modern era.One stat alone won’t tell the full story. In 2023, the Red Sox finished 78-84, in last place for the third time in four seasons. But their record belies how great they were at times, on both individual and collective levels. To truly understand this team, why they flourished, faltered, and how they ultimately failed, one must examine the numbers behind the numbers. So, one last time before the calendar page mercifully flips to a new year and clean slate, here are the 2023 Red Sox by the numbers:Record and recordsHere’s an odd bit of trivia: this was the ninth season in which the Red Sox won exactly 78 games, but only the sixth time they also finished with exactly 84 losses. Rising stars to watch in 2024

Fame matters mightily, especially in a world obsessed with social media. In Hollywood, where celebrity is a constantly changing variable, a new year brings hope. And for a lucky few, recognition. The dreamers that dive into an often cruel and irrational business do so hoping that wishes, as the song says, really do come true.  This year we can expect to see these rising stars showcased in vehicles that will solidify their talent and the expectations that have gotten them this far so far. Here then the Rising Stars of 2024:Teyana Taylor is proof that good work gets noticed.  Taylor turned in a blistering, unforgettable performance in A.V. Rockwell’s darkly realistic “A Thousand and One.”  A winner at Sundance, “Thousand” showcased Taylor as a single mother just out of Rikers prison who kidnaps her son in order to protect him. If few saw the film, rapturous critical acclaim meant lift-off for Taylor’s career. Now she co-stars opposite LaKeith Stanfield in the epic biblical comedy “The B...

Owen DeSalvo ahead of the game

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 08:14:45 GMT

Even at a power football program like BB&N, every now and then, someone as young as an eighth grader can make an impact. The current example of this is strong safety and running back Owen DeSalvo. After the end of the season, DeSalvo represented Massachusetts at the FBU National Championships in Naples, Fla., and was named a finalist for National Eighth Grade Player of the Year. He also earned an invite to the FBU/Adidas Freshman All-American Game. This is all coming off a terrific season with the Knights. He started all nine games on defense, where he was third on the team in tackles, and earned an offer from UMass. It is quite the early resume for the Cohasset native, who is excited to take those next steps as a player.“Before coming to BB&N, I was mainly getting plays at running back and on the offensive side of the ball,” DeSalvo said. “After coming to BB&N this year, I switched to the defensive side of the ball at strong safety. I think over time one o...

SAN DIEGO -- The Ocean Beach Pier is damaged after getting hit hard this weekend during the high surf warning in San Diego County. The pier closed in October as a safety precaution and will remain closed through early 2024 because of previous damage. Large waves eight to 12 feet, with sets up to 18 feet, have been pounding the Southern California coastline this weekend, causing even more damage to the 57-year-old pier. The pier has been closed several times in recent years. Over the past five years, the City of San Diego says it has spent $1.7 million to repair the Ocean Beach Pier, which has been closed to the public about 30% of that time due to damage. Coastal closures in place amid high surf warning in San Diego County “The cycle of damage and repairs for the Ocean Beach Pier has been an increasing challenge in recent years – and one that we cannot prevent,” said City Engineer Rania Amen, Director of the Engineering and Capital Projects Department. “Our teams wi...
