LOS ANGELES — Pinch yourself, Nuggets Nation. The dream is real. For the first time in their NBA history, the Nuggets are on the doorstep of the Finals.Knock politely? No way. No how. After rocking the L.A. Lakers 119-108 here Saturday night, the Nuggets are going to kick that freakin’ door down.Eddie Murphy was here, with his feet on the floor near midcourt, wearing sunglasses. Indoors. At night. In an arena painted with Hollywood glitz, Jake Gyllenhaal turned the head of every lady in the house. And at 86 years old, Jack Nicholson is still so cool he doesn’t even feel the need to comb his hair.So many stars. But on this Saturday night, Nuggets guard Jamal Murray outshined them all.Murray scored 37 points. And every shot by the Blue Arrow drove home a point straight through the doubt surrounding Denver as a legit championship contender. To the shock and dismay of the crowd in L.A., the Nuggets put Game 3 away with a 13-0 run in the fourth quarter. With a commanding 3...Jamal Murray, Nikola Jokic push Nuggets to brink of NBA Finals, take commanding 3-0 lead over Lakers

LOS ANGELES – This wasn’t what Hollywood had in mind.As the Lakers’ season all-but hung in the balance Saturday evening, Denver bulldozed into the City of Angels and re-wrote the script. Ugly, scrappy and united, the Nuggets took a commanding 3-0 lead in the Western Conference Finals with a stunning 119-108 victory. The crowd, dotted with A-list celebrities like Denzel and Jack, sat dumbstruck. With 2:13 left in the fourth quarter, and the Nuggets sitting on a double-digit lead, Lakers fans started heading for the exits. It was an ignominious ending to an ignominious showing from the Lakers, who prior to Saturday night, hadn’t lost at home during the playoffs.By virtue of Jamal Murray’s 37-point showing, 30 of which came in the first half, and a collective effort so overwhelming L.A. couldn’t compete, Denver inched ever so close to its first trip to the NBA Finals.“You need 16 wins to win a championship,” Murray said. “We’ve got five more to go.”They can ...Nuggets 3-pointers: Nikola Jokic’s fourth quarter of Game 3 proves he can survive any slog or slump

Initial observations from Los Angeles after Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals between the Nuggets and Lakers.1. Joker escapes slog: What’s even crazier than Jamal Murray’s historic run? In the same 24-minute span when Murray amassed 40 points — the fourth quarter of Game 2 and the first quarter of Game 3 — Nikola Jokic did not score a single point. The Nuggets outscored the Lakers 64-44 during that consequential stretch anyway, picking up their two-time MVP as he suddenly went into an extended cold stretch. When the Lakers sliced Denver’s long-gone 14-point lead to 66-63 and forced a timeout in the third quarter, Jokic had just back-rimmed a 6-foot floater that’s usually automatic for him. He was 3 for 11 from the field in the game at that point, and he picked up his fourth foul moments later. When Jokic missed his first two shots of the fourth quarter, he was 7 for his last 27 dating back to Game 2. Then he proceeded to deliver a 15-point f...L.A. tech CEO found dead under mysterious circumstances, family seeking answers

HOUSTON — With the A’s on pace to finish with the second-most losses in major league history, they’ll take any kind of victory they can these days. Even if it happens during another defeat.Such was the case Saturday when A’s rookie pitcher JP Sears bounced back from a rough, 37-pitch first inning to throw five scoreless innings while retiring 16 of his final 17 hitters in Houston’s 3-2 victory.Oakland’s left-hander wasn’t involved in the decision, the loss went to reliever Richard Lovelady (0-2), who gave up Yordan Alvarez’s tiebreaking solo home run in the eighth inning. The loss was Oakland’s 11th in its last 13 games and leaves the A’s at a major league-worst 10-37. MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican prosecutors announced Saturday night that they are withdrawing a case against a woman who was sentenced to six years in prison for killing a rapist as he attacked her.In a ruling last week that touched off a public outcry, a court in Mexico State said that while it agreed 23-year-old Roxana Ruiz was raped in 2021, it found her guilty of homicide with “excessive use of legitimate defense.” It also ordered Ruiz to pay more than $16,000 in reparations to the family of her attacker.Feminist groups, which have supported Ruiz’s defense, angrily protested, saying the ruling was criminalizing survivors of sexual violence while protecting perpetrators in a country with high levels of gender-based violence and femicides. Protesters in Mexico City carried signs reading “Defending my life isn’t a crime.” Ruiz told reporters after the court’s ruling that she had received death threats because of the case and that she worried for her family’...Latest news
