Guilderland Public Library's new cafe sets opening date

GUILDERLAND, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Café con Mel has set its grand opening date in the Guilderland Public Library. The cafe is slated to open on Wednesday, September 6 from noon to 4 p.m. Get the latest news, weather, sports and entertainment delivered right to your inbox! The cafe is owned by Melanie Partak and Joy Mercado Henderson. In March, they announced they would be moving from 133 Remsen Street in Cohoes to the Guilderland Public Library.The owners originally announced in August 2022 they would be opening two more locations on Quail Street in Albany and in Guilderland. The Albany location has since closed. Herbie’s Burgers soon opening on Jay Street in Schenectady The cafe will be serving specialty coffee, baked goods, breakfast sandwiches, and lunch bites. ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Two people were injured in a crash on Central Avenue early in the morning on August 20, according to the Albany Police Department. On Sunday at 2:20 a.m., police determined through investigation that a vehicle traveling eastbound on Central Avenue reportedly merged from the left lane into the eastbound right lane, where two oncoming motorcyclists were driving. The vehicle did not hit the motorcycles, but both motorcycles collided with each other, resulting in the two riders being ejected. One of the motorcyclists sustained traumatic injuries and was transported to Albany Medical Center, while the other rider sustained minor injuries and refused medical attention. NEWBURGH, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A Newburgh man was arrested on Sunday for driving while intoxicated, fleeing police, and received a total of 21 tickets. On Sunday, around 1:50 a.m., state troopers saw a 2002 Volvo S-60 driving southbound on Water Street in Newburgh erratically. Police say the car hit a construction sign and continued driving.Troopers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, however, they say the car fled the scene and drove through multiple city streets. The car was driving down Washington Street when the driver lost control and hit a telephone pole on Front Street. SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Mohonasen Central School District will be using Traversa 360, an app that tracks the location of your child's school bus, beginning this academic year. Randy Jerreld, Transportation Director for the district, said the app will make catching the bus easier, safer and eliminate some challenges the district has seen with the bus driver shortage. MADISON, Ill. - A massive fire broke out Sunday night at a salvage yard in Madison County, Illinois.The flames burned into the night at '111 Salvage' on Route 111 in Granite City, Illinois. Several fire departments were called in to fight the four-alarm fire.Thick black smoke could be seen for miles as cars and tires burned. The ramp from Interstate 55 to Highway 111 was closed because of the fire. Hedge apples: Can we eat them? Herb Simmons, with the St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency, shared photos of the fire. The ongoing impacts of the former Hurricane Hilary have created a headache for some commuters in the San Fernando Valley.All lanes of the northbound 5 Freeway were closed in Sun Valley due to flooding, according to sigalert.com and the California Highway Patrol.The closure, reported at 4:50 a.m., affects exits 152 (Lankershim Boulevard) and 153A (Sheldon Street).Traffic was backed up to exit 150B (Sunland Boulevard), the site added.Traffic is being diverted onto Lankershim Boulevard, the CHP said on X, the site formerly known as Twitter, though as of about 7 a.m., CHP Officer Kendricks said the HOV and No. 1 lanes had reopened.By about 7:45 a.m., congestion had eased into stop-and-go traffic, causing delays of up to five minutes, according to sigalert.com.The other lanes are expected to reopen later on Monday.Jill On Money: College-bound financial advice

OAKLAND — A 31-year-old man was fatally shot Sunday evening in East Oakland, the city’s third homicide of the day, authorities said.His name was not immediately released. None of the killings are believed to be related, police said.The 31-year-old man was shot about 5:42 p.m. Sunday outside in the 5800 block of Bancroft Avenue after getting into an argument with another man, authorities said. He died at the scene.The suspect fled before police could respond. Investigators did not specify what they believed the argument was about.The killing is the 71st homicide investigated by Oakland police this year and was the third within a 15-hour period Sunday.
