Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz says midseason announcement on son’s 2024 removal against program’s philosophy

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Kirk Ferentz’s longstanding philosophy has been to evaluate the various facets of his Iowa football program at the end of each season. Interim athletic director Beth Goetz took matters into her own hands and did a midseason assessment of one of the 25th-year coach’s staff members, announcing offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz would be out in 2024.Kirk Ferentz deflected most questions Tuesday about his son’s looming removal but indicated he was not on board with the timing of the announcement. He said the end of the season is a better time for making decisions because less emotion is involved.“I can give you a lot of reasons why I’ve done it that way, but it really doesn’t matter,” he said. “It’s really not significant right now because we’re dealing with something that we have to deal with, and we will.”Iowa ranks 133rd, and last, in the Bowl Subdivision in total offense. The Hawkeyes are 108th in rushing, 128th in passing and 118th in...

D-backs’ Zac Gallen prepares for World Series Game 5, tries to shake mediocre postseason

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 07:29:30 GMT

PHOENIX (AP) — Brandon Pfaadt’s quick improvement on the mound has been critical for the Arizona Diamondbacks in the postseason, and Merrill Kelly’s been rock solid, delivering multiple excellent outings, including his most recent in a Game 2 win during this World Series. As for ace righty Zac Gallen? He’s been just OK.It’s been a disappointing postseason for the All-Star as he prepares to take the mound for Game 5 against the Texas Rangers on Wednesday night. So far in October, he has a 2-2 record and a 5.27 ERA.“We’ve got to remember that Zac spoils us,” D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said Tuesday. “He goes out there and goes five, six, seven innings every single time. And inside of that, he might give up two or three runs, but we’re so used to him giving up zero or one runs.”Gallen has been competitive in his five postseason starts, throwing at least five innings in all of them. But he’s also given up 13 earned runs over the past 16 innings while surre...

Too hot? Help is on the way.

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 07:29:30 GMT

Halloween highs were “frightfully hot” across south Florida. Both Miami and Ft. Lauderdale hit 90-degrees, Tuesday afternoon. At the Ft. Lauderdale – Hollywood International Airport, the 90-degree high actually tied the record for the date! If the recent heat has been too much like our long summer season, some relief will soon be a welcome thing. The change will arrive Wednesday behind a cold front. The cooling front won’t be dramatic (since the air modifies as it moves deeper to the south). Still, you’ll definitely detect a cooling difference. Adding to the milder temperatures will be stronger winds, initially coming out of the north. Winds will be gusty, at times, focusing along the Atlantic beaches and offshore. It’s worth noting that a Gale Watch has been issued by the National Weather Service. They issue this particular marine alert when there is an increased risk for a gale-force wind event (meaning sustained surface winds, or gus...
