PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Scottie Scheffler was fearless on a TPC Sawgrass course that can jangle the nerves on every hole. The wind was getting stronger, the targets looked smaller, and all he wanted was to make sure his lead got larger in The Players Championship.“You can’t limp in on this golf course,” he said. “You’ve got to hit the shots.”He did every bit of that Sunday in a masterful performance that only enhanced his reputation as a player who’s at his best when playing the best in the world.Scheffler ran off five straight birdies in the middle of his round, built a six-shot lead and left all the drama to everyone else on his way to a 3-under 69 to win the richest prize on the PGA Tour by five shots. As a half-dozen players tried to make a game of it, Scheffler took on the daunting Players Stadium Course as if he was playing alone. And that’s how he made it look.“Just looks like he’s calm, just doing his business, not really worrying what eve...South Carolina No. 1 overall seed in women’s NCAA Tournament

South Carolina is six wins away from becoming the 10th women’s basketball team to go undefeated for an entire season, and the Gamecocks will enter the NCAA Tournament as the No. 1 overall seed.Dawn Staley’s squad has been challenged a few times this year but has always pulled through. The defending national champions will play Norfolk State in the first round of the tournament, the NCAA selection committee revealed Sunday. While the Gamecocks, led by star Aliyah Boston, have been a lock to be the top seed for most of the season, several schools were vying for the other No. 1s, including Iowa, Indiana, Virginia Tech, Stanford and Utah. The Hawkeyes, led by electrifying guard Caitlin Clark, have been a top seed twice before, in 1988 and 1992. The Hoosiers, Hokies and Utes have never been No. 1s. Stanford has been a top seed 12 times, including the previous two years. The tournament begins Wednesday with two First Four games. The full madness starts with 16 games Friday and 1...Letang’s OT winner lifts Penguins by Rangers 3-2

Kris Letang knows the Pittsburgh Penguins have the NHL’s oldest team. The 35-year-old defenseman is one of the reasons why.The Penguins have never missed the playoffs during Letang’s 17-year career. They know what it takes to get there, even if this time around it may have taken a little longer than usual for that postseason push to begin. It’s well underway now, and Letang is right in the middle of it.Letang’s blast from the point 1:38 into overtime lifted Pittsburgh to a 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers on Sunday, strengthening his team’s grasp on the first wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. Not bad for a team that looked lost after getting blown out at home by Edmonton on Feb. 23. The Penguins are 7-1-1 since.“I think if you look at our age average, a lot of guys have the experience and they know what to do to turn it on and make sure we get in the postseason and we start getting confident,” Letang said after his third overtime winner of th...Padres’ Melvin ponders 6-man rotation, opening day starter

The San Diego Padres are flirting with the idea of beginning the season with a six-man pitching rotation.Settling on an opening day starter, though, may not be as easy a decision for manager Bob Melvin. With Joe Musgrove sidelined by a toe injury and Yu Darvish pitching for Japan in the World Baseball Classic, Melvin is exploring options that could include Blake Snell or Michael Wacha.Musgrove, who’s on the mend after dropping a weight on his left big toe, is set to throw a bullpen session Monday. And while he has made progress in his recovery since having the nail taken off the toe, there’s no guarantee he’ll ready for the March 30 opener against the Colorado Rockies. If Musgrove doesn’t suffer a setback, though, there’s a chance he could be inserted at the rear of the proposed six-man rotation the Padres are considering because they are scheduled to begin the season with a stretch of 24 games in 25 days.“It is pretty amazing to me, but since he got the nail taken off the pain has sub...March Madness selection committee names unbeaten South Carolina No. 1 overall seed for women’s NCAA Tournament

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jimmy Kimmel promised “no nonsense” at the 95th Academy Awards on Sunday as Hollywood reconvened for a ceremony that will try to move past one of the most infamous moments in Oscar history. In one of the night's first awards, former child star Ke Huy Quan capped his extraordinary comeback with the Oscar for best supporting actor. Quan, beloved for his roles as Short Round in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” and Data in “Goonies,” had all but given up acting before being cast in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”His win, among the most expected of the night, was nevertheless one of the ceremony's most moving moments. The audience — including his “Temple of Doom” director, Steven Spielberg — gave Quan a standing ovation as he fought back tears. “Mom, I just won an Oscar!” said Quan, 51, whose family fled Vietnam in the war when he was a child. “They say stories like this only happen in the movies. I can't believe it's happening,” said Quan. "This is the Amer...Search underway for 72-year-old man reported missing in Fort Lauderdale

LOWELL – It’s only a matter of time until Xaverian senior Joe DiMartino changes his legal name to “Playoff Joe.”After a whole night of hearing his name chanted by a large student section at the Tsongas Center, DiMartino fulfilled their pleas Sunday night by sending the Hawks to TD Garden for a second straight year. His goal with 4:47 left in overtime stood as the only score in the No. 7 Hawks’ 1-0 win over No. 14 Reading in the second Div. 1 state semifinal of the day, ending a defensive marathon that featured two of the tournament’s most dialed-in goaltenders.Cole Pouliot-Porter (25 saves) and the Xaverian defense were able to hold on just a little longer than Chris Hanifan (21 saves) and the Rockets, and now have a date with No. 4 Pope Francis in the final next Sunday to try to avenge its loss last year.“You guys know ‘Playoff Joe,’ right,” said Xaverian head coach Dave Spinale. “Every year since we won the conference two years ago when he was a sophomore, he’s always scored the b...Latest news
