MANILA, Philippines (AP) — One person died and nearly 100 had to be rescued after a ferry in the central Philippines struck floating debris at sea and took on water Saturday, police said. The accident involving the King Sto. Nino 7, which was carrying 98 people, was the third to hit the country in just over a week, police said. All those on board were rescued, except for a female passenger who suffered a heart attack and died during the scramble for safety as water gushed into the wooden-hulled vessel in sunny weather off the island town of Corcuera in Romblon province, officials said.Sea accidents are common in the Philippines because of frequent storms, poorly maintained boats, overcrowding and weak enforcement of safety regulations. After some passengers on the King Sto. Nino 7 managed to call for help, coast guard personnel and nearby ferry boats approached to rescue the 93 passengers and five crew members, who were brought to a nearby village, Corcuera police chief Capt. KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Moscow promised retaliation Saturday after Ukrainian drones hit a Russian tanker in the Black Sea near Crimea late Friday, the second sea attack involving drones in one day. Ukraine struck a major Russian port earlier on Friday. Moscow strongly condemned what it sees as a Ukrainian “terrorist attack” on a civilian vessel in the Kerch Strait, said Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.“There can be no justification for such barbaric actions, they will not go unanswered and their authors and perpetrators will inevitably be punished,” she wrote on the Telegram messaging app.As Kyiv’s naval capabilities grow, the Black Sea is becoming an increasingly important battleground in the war.Three weeks ago, Moscow withdrew from a key export agreement that allowed Ukraine to ship millions of tons of grain across the Black Sea for sale on world markets. In the wake of that withdrawal, Russia carried out repeated strikes on Ukrainian ports, including Odesa. An o...

Could AI help detect more cancers from mammograms?

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 14:03:18 GMT

(The Hill) - An artificial intelligence (AI) analysis of mammograms detected more cancers than two breast radiologists working together, according to a new study, without increasing false positives and almost halving the radiologists' workload.Interim findings from the first randomized study investigating the use of AI in a national breast cancer screening program, published in the journal Lancet Oncology, suggested AI-supported screening detected 20 percent more cancers compared with the routine double reading of mammograms by two breast radiologists.European guidelines recommend double reading of screening mammograms to ensure high sensitivity. The U.S. does not have the same standard, but like many other countries is experiencing a shortage of breast radiologists. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the U.S., accounting for about 30 percent of all new cancer cases in women each year. Your Money: Tax-smart IRA distributions to consider

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 14:03:18 GMT

Bruce Helmer and Peg WebbIn our practices, we often have older clients who have built a substantial balance in their qualified accounts such as traditional IRAs or 401(k) plans. In many cases they don’t need to take income from these accounts when they reach age 73, the new start date for taking required minimum distributions (RMDs). Fortunately, two popular provisions within the Internal Revenue Code will permit them to defer RMDs into the future while making meaningful contributions to charity, as well as reduce the size of the RMDs they would otherwise have to take by using deferred income annuities. What’s the tax problem with IRA distributions?Distributions from a traditional IRA or 401(k) are taxed at ordinary rates, currently topping out at 37%. Because they’re taxable, RMDs may also create tax issues around net investment income tax (NIIT) for many taxpayers. For this reason, seniors who don’t need the income often choose to postpone distributions for as long as possible. If yo...
