The CrampsSongs the Lord Taught Us (IRS)Songs the Lord Taught Tombstones in Their Eyes: John Treaner, singer with LA shoegaze outfit Tombstones in Their Eyes, told us about his love for a Cramps classic.John Treanor: Choosing one album that changed my life is pretty tough.  I first thought of the Germs (GI) and Devo’s Duty Now For the Future record, both of which I purchased at the age of 15 and which blew my young mind.  And those records still resonate today.  But for this one, I’m going with The Cramps’ Songs The Lord Taught Us, as it also had a lasting impact on me musically, with roots, punk, psychedelia, fuzz guitar, reverb and edgy lunacy smashing together.(IRS)I started Tombstones In Their Eyes with James Cooper, whom I have known since I was about 13.  We both got into punk at the same time and started a little band together, writing a couple of songs before we veered off into different orbits.  It was after reconnecting with James about 10 years ago that we started w...

Did tagged coyote in San Jose make its way from San Francisco?

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:09:05 GMT

DEAR JOAN: We live in the Thousand Oaks area just south of Capitol Auto Mall. Over the past few months, we have seen a couple of coyotes roaming our neighborhood and parks. Recently, we noticed one of them had a tag on its ear. Any idea who would do this and what information we can retrieve from this apparent monitoring? Also, there are two gray foxes living in a neighbor’s backyard and roaming our fences. Will they eventually move on?— Dennis, San JoseDEAR DENNIS: Your visiting coyote might be part of a tagging program conducted by biologists and scientists with the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and the Presidio Trust in San Francisco. In 2015, the Presidio Trust captured 16 coyotes in the park, tagged them, gave them temporary radio collars and released them. More recently, a handful of coyotes were tagged and collared in the Marin Headlands area. The tagging and tracking are attempts to learn more about coyotes’ movements and activities to help wildlife specialists mana...

Carrots deserve our attention. They are more than just a ubiquitous vegetable you hope your kids will eat. Sure, these colorful roots are a blast of nutrients and naturally sweet. They’re a go-to method to ensure we get our daily dose of vitamins. They undeniably play an important supporting role in stews, soups and sauces, or as a colorful flourish to leafy green salads and vegetable medleys. However, carrots are more than just a token flavor agent and accompaniment to a main dish. They are versatile and exciting and can easily be celebrated as the star attraction. This recipe shines the spotlight on the humble carrot. It’s the center of the plate, dusted with a blend of harissa spice, which is a fiery, fragrant North African condiment. Harissa is a mixture of ground and smoked chiles, garlic and spices such as cumin, coriander and caraway seeds. It can be a dry spice blend or a paste. It’s easy to concoct your own blend, as we’ve done below, which you can ma...

Travel Troubleshooter: Tauck requires a COVID vaccine to cruise, so I require a refund!

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:09:05 GMT

DEAR TRAVEL TROUBLESHOOTER: In early 2021, my girlfriend and I booked a fall foliage riverboat cruise with Tauck. At the time, there was no requirement for us to be vaccinated for the COVID-19 virus.A year later, just before our cruise, I received an email titled “COVID-19 Policy Update for Your Upcoming Journey.” It required all guests to be “up to date” with their vaccinations.Christopher Elliott, the Travel Troubleshooter We would have never booked this tour if this requirement had been in place in 2021. Tauck changed the terms of its agreement without our consent. After receiving the COVID-19 policy update, we canceled the tour. Tauck gave us eVouchers for our next reservation, which are useless to us because of their COVID-19 policy.I want a complete refund of the four eVouchers. Can you help me?— Daryl DeCrow, Simi Valley, CaliforniaANSWER: If Tauck changed its terms, you should be able to get a full refund. But your story is more complicated ...

For this Black mom, Ralph Yarl could have been her son

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:09:05 GMT

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — On April 13, the nightmare that I’d worried about ever since we moved into our neighborhood came true. That was the day that I learned 16-year-old Ralph Yarl was shot after mistakenly ringing a doorbell at the wrong house while trying to pick up his younger brothers from a playdate. And even as I anguished over what happened to him, one thing kept echoing in my mind: It could have been my child. John, my older son, is 17 and attends the same high school as Ralph. It’s common for me to ask John to pick up his 14-year-old brother Jaden from various extracurricular activities. I’ve been cautious about what I ask John to do and where I ask him to go. I don’t know what might happen if he crosses paths with someone who feels threatened by the color of his skin. That’s because the suburbs of Kansas City north of the Missouri River have long held a reputation of not being the most welcoming to Black families. While I’ve adjusted to the awkward stares and su...
